In an age where sustainability is not just a buzzword but a necessity, choosing the right solar panels for your home can make a significant impact on both your energy bills and the environment. Among the myriad of options available, QCells solar panels stand out for their exceptional green credentials. But what makes them special? Let’s explore why QCells’ Q.TRON and Q.PEAK DUO solar panels are some of the greenest in the industry and why they should be your choice for a sustainable future.

The Rise of Sustainable Solar Energy

Solar energy has long been hailed as a clean and renewable source of power. This is where QCells shines, offering products that meet stringent environmental criteria.

What Is EPEAT?

EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) is a globally recognized ecolabel that helps consumers identify environmentally preferable products. EPEAT considers the entire product life cycle, from material sourcing and manufacturing to packaging, transportation, and end-of-life recycling. Products registered under EPEAT meet high sustainability standards, making them a reliable choice for eco-conscious consumers.

QCells and EPEAT Registration

QCells’ Q.TRON and Q.PEAK DUO solar panels recently received EPEAT registration, meeting the Global Electronics Council’s strict sustainability criteria.

In an age where sustainability has taken center stage, electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly becoming a symbol of affordable eco-conscious transportation. But beyond the environmental benefits they offer, one question persists in the minds of many consumers and prospective EV owners: How much does it cost to power an electric car?

The economic implications of driving an EV are multifaceted, involving the dynamics of electricity pricing, the vehicle’s energy consumption, and the comparison with traditional gasoline-powered cars. In this deep-dive, we’ll explore the costs associated with driving a Tesla Model 3 and how investing in a home solar photovoltaic (PV) system can significantly shift the math in favor of electric mobility.

Understanding Electricity Rates for Electric Vehicles

Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) EV rate plans are designed to encourage owners to charge their EVs during off-peak hours with reduced rates. Off-peak rates average about 35 cents per kWh, a significant discount compared to peak rates, which are 73 cents per kWh on the EV1 rate and 66 cents per kWh on the EV2 rate.

To benefit from these lower rates, EV owners must adhere to the specified peak hours when energy demand is highest. This pricing model incentivizes charging during periods of low demand, such as overnight, which helps balance the energy load on the grid.

Tesla Model 3 Electricity Consumption

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Tesla Model 3 requires approximately 0.25 kWh per mile. Applying the off-peak electricity rate of 35 cents per kWh, the cost to drive a Tesla Model 3 comes down to $0.0875 per mile.

To draw a parallel, consider a gasoline-powered car with similar features and performance to a Tesla Model 3, achieving an efficiency of 30 miles per gallon. At a cost of $5 per gallon for gas (in California), the cost per mile is computed to be $0.167. Remarkably, that’s almost double the per-mile cost of running the Model 3 on electricity.

Halving the Cost with Home Solar Systems

Now, envision a scenario where your household generates its own electricity through a PV system. The cost of producing electricity with a properly installed solar system—and under favorable sun exposure conditions—usually hovers around $0.15 per kWh over the lifespan of the system. When you use this home-generated energy to charge your EV, the cost dramatically decreases to about $0.044 per mile.

Conclusion: The Economic Benefit of Solar-Powered EVs

The transition to electric vehicles promises a more sustainable future, but it also offers tangible economic benefits, particularly when paired with renewable energy sources like solar power. While the initial cost of a PV system might seem significant, the long-term savings on EV charging and overall household energy consumption can be substantial.

For environmentally conscious consumers, driving an EV is not just a commitment to reducing one’s carbon footprint—it’s also a savvy financial decision. Charging an EV with solar power doesn’t only cut the cost per mile; it also insulates you from the volatility of energy prices, offering a degree of energy independence that is increasingly valuable.

We encourage readers who are considering an EV purchase to look not just at the sticker price of the vehicle but also at the broader economic and environmental picture. By integrating smart energy habits and renewable technology into your lifestyle, driving an electric car can become an investment that delivers returns for years to come.

The road to a cleaner, greener and more cost-effective future is paved with innovations like the electric vehicle and solar energy, and it is one that promises to reward those who choose to travel it.

Are you considering installing a solar energy system for your home? If so, you’ve probably come across the terms “kilowatt” (kW) and “kilowatt-hour” (kWh). While they may sound similar, they represent two distinct concepts that are essential to understand when sizing your solar panel system.

Power vs. Energy: The Fundamental Difference

To grasp the difference between kilowatts and kilowatt-hours, it’s important to understand the concepts of power and energy:

Power is the ability to do work. It is measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW), where 1 kW equals 1,000 watts.

Energy is the amount of power consumed over a period of time to do work. It is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Solar System Sizing: Why Kilowatts (kW) Matter

When discussing the size of a solar panel system, the common unit used is kilowatts (kW). This measurement represents the total power output of all the solar panels combined.

However, many homeowners often focus on the number of solar panels on the roof instead of the system’s total kilowatt size and kilowatt-hour energy produced. This method of testing system size and ultimately effectiveness is incorrect. Let’s use an example to illustrate why:

Scenario 1: A system with 26 solar panels rated at 360W each would have a total output of 9,360W or 9.36kW (26 x 360W = 9,360W).

Scenario 2: A system with the same number of panels (26) but rated at 425W each would have a total output of 11,050W or 11.05kW (26 x 425W = 11,050W).

As you can see, the number of solar panels alone doesn’t determine the size of the solar system. It’s the total kilowatt size that matters. Kilowatts produce kilowatt-hours.

Energy Production: The Role of Kilowatt-Hours (kWh)

While kilowatts define the size of your solar system, kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure the amount of energy that system will produce over a given period—typically a day, month, or year.

Utility companies, including local providers like PG&E, SMUD, and Roseville Electric, use kilowatt-hours as the standard billing unit for energy consumption. If your home consumes 15,000kWh per year, you will need a solar system sized (kW) appropriately to meet your need. Again, kilowatts produce kilowatt-hours.

Importance of Understanding kW vs. kWh in Solar Investments

As a homeowner investing in a solar energy system, it’s crucial to understand the difference between kilowatts and kilowatt-hours to ensure you’re getting the right system size for your needs.

Some solar providers may focus solely on the number of panels, hiding essential information that could lead to a subpar or misleading installation. By asking the right questions and understanding the fine details of your solar system, you can protect your investment and enjoy the long-term benefits of clean energy. In most cases, the solar system must generate enough kilowatt-hours to cover your yearly needs to see excellent financial returns and a positive user experience. Take your time, become informed, and don’t be afraid of the unknown. Any reputable solar company will be happy you are asking these types of questions.

As a California homeowner considering solar energy, you might be wondering about the roles of solar (panels) and batteries in your upcoming solar system purchase. With recent changes in the state’s energy landscape, batteries have become an essential component of a residential solar setup. Proper battery sizing is crucial for ensuring your system’s financial viability and performance. In this post, we’ll guide you through the process of accurately sizing a home solar battery.

The Importance of Batteries in California Solar Systems

In California, the economics of solar systems heavily rely on batteries. Without a properly sized battery, your solar investment might not make financial sense. Batteries allow you to store excess energy produced during the day (by the solar panels) for use during peak hours or when the sun isn’t shining. This increases the value of the energy produced by your solar system and lowers your utility bill cost substantially.

Steps to Properly Size Your Home Solar Battery

1. Obtain Accurate Electricity Consumption Data

The first step in sizing your solar system battery is to provide your solar installer with precise information about your electricity consumption. In PG&E territory, this data is called “Green Button Data” and can be easily downloaded from your online PG&E bill pay portal. Accurate consumption data is essential for your solar company to generate a design that meets your needs (number of solar panels to install). This avoids wasting time and potentially your money on an incorrectly sized system.

2. Discuss Future Electricity Demand

Have a detailed conversation with your solar company about any expected increases in your electricity demand. Are you planning to purchase an electric vehicle? Will you be installing a pool or hot tub? Have you considered a heat pump to get away from expensive natural gas or propane? These factors significantly impact your energy needs, and your solar company must be aware of them to design a system that meets your existing needs and future requirements. Failing to account for increased demand can result in a system that underperforms, leading to a poor customer experience and a negative online outlook that is oh, so common.

Your solar company will input your consumption data (Green Button preferably) and future needs into a sophisticated estimation software tool. This software generates a highly detailed and accurate consumption profile, which serves as the baseline for designing your solar and battery system.

4. Analyze the Results

Let’s consider an example: Mr. and Mrs. Jones consume 12,000 kWh per year and plan on adding an EV that is driven 10,000 miles per year. Due to shading concerns, increased demand, and panel orientation, the software determines they need 13 kW DC of solar panels (PV). But what about the battery? This is where the data you provided in steps 1 and 2 comes into play.

5. Apply Industry-Accepted Battery Sizing Practices

There are two main approaches to battery sizing:

Manufacturer Recommendations: Some battery manufacturers, like Tesla (Powerwall 3) and Enphase (IQ5P), recommend sizing the battery at 2x the system size DC. In our example, this would mean 13 kW DC x 2 = 26 kWh of battery storage. Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries come in increments of 13.5kWh and Enphase IQ5P batteries come in increments of 5kWh. So, you would need two Powerwall 3 batteries or five Enphase IQ 5P batteries to cover your needs. Both are excellent options.

Seasoned Designer Approach: Experienced solar designers often recommend sizing the battery at 2/3rds of your daily consumption. From our example above and factoring in the consumption of the EV, total electricity demand is 15,000 kWh per year or 41kWh per day. 2/3 of 41kWh is 27kWh needed in battery storage capacity. Like above, two Tesla Powerwall 3’s or five Enphase IQ5P batteries would be needed. This analytical approach ensures that the solar panels cover the home’s usage during the day, while the batteries cover the consumption during the evening and early morning. This approach also tests the Green Button data more heavily and better captures the lifestyle under the roof that the batteries are working to support.

In sum, both approaches generate a similar result. However, it is always best to test Green Button Data. More on how to get your PG&E Green Button Data to your solar company in a later blog post.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3258" class="wp-image-3258" src="https://www.sunriversolar.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Powerwall-2-Pics.png" alt="Two Tesla Powerwall+ batteries with a Tesla Powerwall 2. Total storage capacity 40.5kWh powering entire home.

The Importance of Collaboration

Ultimately, both the customer and the solar company play crucial roles in determining the proper number of solar panels and battery size. As a potential customer, sharing accurate consumption data and future energy needs is essential for a well-designed and properly functioning solar and battery system. Solar contractors, in turn, must ask the right questions and use industry best practices to size the battery accurately. If one of both of these are not occurring, problems will likely arise down the road.

If you’re interested in learning more about solar with batteries and how they can help you save money, consider reaching out to a reputable solar company like Sunriver Solar.
